Amina Saidu Mohammed - Nigeria

When Amina Saidu Mohammed, 15, first joined the Safe Space, she was terrified. In the Nigerian Kwaya Kusar region, Boko Haram and other armed groups sow terror in this very rural area. Young girls are particularly vulnerable to their attacks, and Amina had heard stories. But, the Safe Space offers her an informal location where she can share and understand her fears, meet with other adolescent girls, make friends and build self-confidence.

Every week, Amina discusses and practices important life skills with mentors and social workers like sexual and reproductive health or financial literacy.  “A lot has changed in my life since I joined the Safe Space,” Amina says with enthusiasm. The Safe Space also promotes safe livelihoods, and Amina’s mentor has helped her develop her small business by selling Kunu, a popular local drink.

“I learned how to not just save money but also control spending. I saved 5,000 Naira from selling Kunu and I bought two goats with it.” And this was a smart move: Amina can now breed her goats and sell the newborns. Thanks to this, she can help to support her family. She now hopes to put this experience at the service of other adolescents and become a Safe Space mentor herself. #SheisWe.
