Through an open commission in partnership with the H&M Foundation, WaterAid invited Ethiopian artist Aida Muluneh to respond to our core concern – lack of access to safe water and sanitation. Muleneh’s extraordinary images constitute a dialogue about these issues in relation to art and its role in advocacy, as well as about how Africa is represented by aid organisations and media from the global north. Additionally, Muluneh’s images bring attention to the challenges in providing long-term service sustainability and behaviour sustainability, as well as in ensuring WASH services to all groups in society.

'How marginal communities are repurposing waste to solve problems' highlights the affectionate and authentic perspectives of the young photographers, portraying how their community is repurposing what the world is throwing away in order to solve problems: houses made of wood, metal, and old busses; fences made out of windshields; old seats from busses being used at their community centre. Also, how aware they are of not being defined by external stereotypes, more often than not, reinforced by outsiders taking photos about their situation. We so often have a preconceived idea about what these individuals need. But no one better than themselves to voice their challenges and share their own stories.

In partnership with the European Union, the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Mauritania has developed employment promotion programs to fight inequalities and increase economic opportunities for youth in precarious situations and improve their employability and skills.
In this context, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team - a photographer, a writer, an anthropologist -, the programmes decided to highlight the positive experiences of the people involved in these different programs. Some photographs taken along the road of this teamwork will be exhibited in Brussels during the EDDs to share the energy that drives Mauritania and to show the willingness of these youth whose lives have changed through their jobs.

Today, more than 65 million people are uprooted by war, violence and persecution. Women and girls make up half of this number. On top of losing everything, they are confronted with gender discrimination and gender-based violence. Despite the obstacles and often against all odds, displaced women and girls are doing their utmost to build their lives and the lives of their loved ones, and to live with dignity.

The photo exhibition is co-organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the European Commission’s Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations.

At the exhibition, you will have the chance to receive a special eco-friendly bag, designed and crafted by Teenah, a social manufacturing company that employs Syrian refugee women and Jordanian women in the north of Jordan. This is also part of UNHCR’s new Made 51 Initiative, which aims at bringing beautiful refugee-made products that merge contemporary design with traditional skills to the global market.
