Protected area management and species conservation

Habitat destruction threatens animal and plant species, wrecks ecosystems and destroys biodiversity. But the process can be controlled and even reversed with protected area management.

Wildlife and protected areas help save irreplaceable and threatened habitats and protect endangered species for present and future generations. This protection supports biodiversity in the face of continuing global pressures from rising human populations, urbanization, new demands for natural resources, and changing lifestyles. Done well, protection can sustain wildlife, play a pivotal role in balancing agricultural production, promote biodiversity conservation, while simultaneously meeting human needs.

How can we set up protected areas as well as safeguarding human livelihoods? How can we support countries in valuing habitats and species as important natural and economic assets, capable of positively impacting local and national economies?
