Gender budgeting: what is it good for?

Do finance ministries have a useful role to play?

Project or report lab
Tuesday, June 5, 2018
14:00 to 15:15

Is there any such thing as ‘gender budgeting’ or ‘gender-aware fiscal policy’, or is there just ‘good budgeting’ and ‘sound fiscal policy’? A moderated discussion will explore what role finance ministries could or should have in supporting gender equality, how these efforts should relate to other government goals and through what mechanisms public expenditure management systems could specifically support women and girls. It will focus particularly on low-income and low-capability states and what options might be available to finance ministries to make public expenditure more gender aware. ODI will also outline the findings from its new public finance management introductory guide on gender-responsive public expenditure management. The discussion will be followed by an interactive Q&A.
