Renewable Energy Impact on Off-grid Communities in Zambia

EU funded Capacity Building for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency – Feasibility Studies and Demonstration Projects, Zambia

Only 12% of Zambians living in rural areas have access to electricity, with the majority living under the poverty line. Such low electrification rates limit the full integration of rural communities into the economy.  A target in the 7th National Development Plan (2017-2021) is doubling of the rural people with access to electricity through innovative off-grid renewable energy projects that suit the highly dispersed populations across the country. Emphasis is on increasing private sector investment and the necessity of providing an enabling policy and regulation to streamline investment.
