The Senegal River basin is shared by Senegal, Mauritania, Mali and Guinea. The objective of the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) is to control the availability of water and to seek the means for a rational and coordinated exploitation of the basin's resources in order to support the development of the populations that share the basin while preserving the balance and strengthening the sustainability of the ecosystems.

Since 2020, OMVS, supported by the European Commission and the Italian Development Cooperation under the WEFE-SENEGAL programme, in collaboration with national water authorities, is implementing a basin-wide operational water quality monitoring programme, which will serve as a model for a permanent water quality observatory in the Senegal River Basin and beyond, to support future development strategies in the river basin.
