Waste recycling in the green economy in Mali: the case of the recycling caravan

Strengthening eco-citizenship of young people and family income through sorting, collection and recycling of waste in Mali.

Waste management is a major problem in Mali. Almost 2 million tonnes of waste are produced each year, but half of this waste is neither collected nor treated and no sustainable waste management system is put in place by local authorities. Yet 88% of this waste is recyclable, generating income and creating local jobs.
The recycling caravan project fits into this context and allows, through a mobile device, to promote eco-citizenship by raising awareness among young people about the sorting and recycling of waste while generating income for families who sort their waste.
