Brainstorming lab
Tuesday, June 15, 2021
11:45 to 13:00

Up to 13 million tons of plastic waste are entering the oceans annually, harming marine environments. We need solutions at the interface of circular economy, waste management, health, SCP, biodiversity and climate protection. The EU Green Deal with its Circular Economy Action Plan guides actions.

The session features promising approaches from Asia, Latin America, and Africa for establishing a circular economy and preventing marine litter. It focuses on 4 areas:

1. Sustainable consumption: Awareness, economic incentives, regulations for minimising resource use and waste

2. Circular economy: Extended Producer Responsibility, informal sector inclusion

3. Sustainable production: Innovation in business models, design and production

4. Monitoring: Leveraging data for marine litter prevention
