To cope with the dramatic loss of the mangrove’s areas (more than 30% between 1970s and 1990s), protection or restoration incentives have been conducted. The last decade’s political agenda put mangrove in the spotlight because of its particular function of Climate Change mitigation and the recognition of the multiple services issued from them.

While mangrove’s contributions to people are recognized, while its drastic decline worldwide is undeniable, its current status and the solutions recommended for its sustainable and equitable governance are debatable.

This session aims questioning the legitimacy of mangrove conservation policies. A particular attention will be given to the feasibility (design, timeframe and execution) of financial mechanisms and their effects on people livelihood.
