Larger than Lions: A Science-Based Strategy for Lasting Ecosystem Protection

Using Surveys, Security and Sustainable Development to Recover West & Central Africa’s Savannas and Preserve their Irreplaceable Biodiversity

From 2007 to 2012, Panthera conducted West & Central Africa’s first comprehensive field surveys to assess the status of the region’s big cats. The dire results led to the West African lion being classified as Critically Endangered. Based on our dataset, Panthera identified the region’s most imperiled populations of big cats and other threatened species. Focusing on two lion populations - Africa’s most genetically isolated, located in Gabon and Senegal respectively - Panthera initiated long-term efforts to restore lions and the wealth of biodiversity they support at ecosystem scale.
