The momentum is growing to turn 2021 into a year for transformative action for Nature and People. While the targets related to conservation and protected areas set at COP10 of the Convention on Biological Diversity are some of the few with good hopes of being achieved, the question of their actual contribution to biodiversity governance remains.
Are protected areas enough to bend the curve of biodiversity loss? Which other mechanisms should be considered to ensure conservation and human wellbeing? How should these be enshrined in the frameworks of nature governance and sustainable development?
Meriem Bouamrane (UNESCO Man & the Biosphere Programme) and Hugo Rivera-Mendoza (Post-2020 Biodiversity – EU Support) will discuss pathways to transformative biodiversity governance, from protected areas to nature’s intricate links with all aspects of livelihoods and prosperity.
