Science, conservation and development to address inequalities and climate change

DRC’s Yangambi Biosphere Reserve becomes a forest research hub, creating economic opportunities for local populations.

The vast forests of the Congo Basin provide livelihoods to over 60 million people, but they are currently under unprecedented threat due to climate change and unsustainable management of natural resources. With the support of the European Union, CIFOR and its partners are working to promote local development and to protect the environment around the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve, a unique landscape home to endangered fauna and flora and over 100,000 people - all by unlocking the potential of local entrepreneurship and welcoming scientists from all over the world.
